In his spare time, Drake enjoys camping, water and snow skiing, reading, and of course, gardening. Drake and Lynn have two wonderful daughters, two talented son-in-laws, and seven grandchildren. Together, he and Lynn received the Farm Bureau President’s award in 1999 for their service and dedication to agriculture in the state of Oregon. Additionally, Drake serves on the Board of Directors for the Portland Japanese Gardens, widely regarded as one of the seven best Japanese gardens outside of Japan.ĭrake is married to former Oregon Speaker of the House, Lynn Snodgrass. He later expanded into the design/build side of the industry, allowing him to combine his passion for plants with his love of family by maximizing the quality of family time spent outdoors.ĭrake is co-founder of the Oregon Landscape Contractors Association and is a Landscape Industry Certified Manager (LICM)-a designation that less than two percent of landscapers have attained. He opened Drake’s 7 Dees in 1974, while earning degrees in Business and Horticulture from Oregon State University. When a separate landscape designer and construction contractor must be engaged, clients are responsible for finding each service provider and learning to work with each.Our designers, on the other hand, collaborate with the contractors on staff at Drake’s 7 Dees in order to make sure that every design comes in within the target budget. As a result, thousands of dollars may be spent devising plans which are not buildable within a reasonable budget. Designers sometimes do not take into account or even know the costs associated with making their work a reality.Drake’s is different because while we are Portland landscape designers, we are more than that – which we why we call our service “design and build.”Ĭompanies that offer only landscape design services will develop plans for a space and sell those plans so that they can be applied by a landscaping contractor.
